Chapter 3: Navigating the Waves
- Milestones achieved (e.g., HRT, legal name change, coming out publicly).
My electrologist introduced me to hormones—back in the day, this was Premarin. The subtle changes to my body profoundly enhanced my growing feelings of contentment and completeness. Jenny was always to be my name as when I was young Mum would insist on washing my hair in the kitchen sink. To pacify her child who was intent on escape, she would tell me a story about Jenny on The Farm. Jenny was always in trouble, so I liked her a lot. Say no more!
- Obstacles encountered in healthcare, workplaces, or relationships.
Professional healthcare had not yet evolved to support us, meaning my primary source of information and guidance came entirely from others within the community. I have never experienced any obstacles in the workplace, for me being trans has presented many opportunities.
- Sources of unexpected joy, community support, and resilience.
On each occasion that I presented publicly, an overwhelming feeling of freedom and joy pervaded my entire being. I had never known that level of peace while living in my assigned gender at birth.
Chapter 4: Finding My True Self
- The current stage of your transition journey.
I began my transition in my thirties, and much has passed as the years have rolled by. As my financial position improved, I extensively researched gender-affirming surgeries to facilitate further change, giving me greater confidence in my public presentation and profoundly improving my overall wellbeing.
- Physical, mental, and emotional changes you celebrate most.
The greatest change has been understanding and accepting that who we are at our core will never alter. We can try to hide it, or pretend to exude masculinity to disguise it, but ultimately, how I felt never wavered. Embracing that truth brought an immense sense of being at one with myself.
- How your relationship with yourself and the world has transformed.
I have found an inner contentment and peace of mind that can only come from living the life I always needed to live. For me, being trans has also opened incredible doors. It led me to work alongside some of the world's leading surgeons, created fulfilling employment and self-employment opportunities, and allowed me to travel extensively throughout Europe and further afield in association with specialised surgical practices.
Chapter 5: Words for the Next Generation
- One piece of vital advice for someone starting their transition.
For many of us, how we feel inside will never change. Once I was sure, I embraced this truth and made the changes necessary to facilitate a full, authentic, and meaningful life. However, circumstances, age, and maturity all play a vital part in this life-altering decision. I would encourage anyone to look inward and find that absolute certainty before embarking on permanent physical changes. However, some of us do know from an early age and it is my hope that they will receive the support, compassion and understanding that they need.
- A message of hope or encouragement to your younger self.
Never give up, no matter how impossible it all may seem right now. Follow your instincts, trust your inner voice, and embrace life for all the wonder that being your true self will bring.
Conclusion: Life Now
- I continue to lead an amazing and fulfilling life as a professional electrologist, specialising in the treatment of trans clients from all over the UK and throughout Europe. My work, however, is about so much more than just electrolysis. I share deeply in each of your journeys, bringing a lifetime of both professional and personal experience that I am always pleased to share, as appropriate, with you all.
- Peace, joy and contentment, Jenny.
